Ph.D (History) at University of Delhi


Kochi: Applications for admission to the Ph.D. programme in the Department of History, University of Delhi are solicited for the January 2016 session and available in the office of the Board of Research Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Interested candidates are required to submit their application along with one copy of the synopsis on the topic of their proposed research to the office of the Department of History at the latest by Friday, 29th January, 2016.

The written examination will be held on Tuesday, 2nd February, 2016 at 2.00 pm.
The qualifying examination shall be of two hours’ duration. Candidates will be required to answer any one question from out of four. The maximum marks will be 100. The questions for the examination will consist of passages from significant texts in history and will be chosen keeping the post-graduate History syllabi of the University of Delhi as a standard. The subject matter will include themes from all periods of Indian history and world history, historiography, and the use of sources. Candidates will be required to write an essay in response to the passage of their choice. The essay should reflect the candidate’s comprehension of the given passage, informed by the work that has been done in the area with which the passage is related. The essay will be evaluated on the basis of the discernment of the major argument of the passage, reasoning, clarity, innovation in presentation, and originality of thought. The question paper will be in English. Students have the option of answering the question in English or Hindi. Those who score 50 marks or more shall be declared to have passed the examination (subject to the reservation rules of the University) and will be called for the interview.

Candidates whose names appears on the interview list will be required to submit 12 copies of their research proposal in the Department office by Thursday, 11th February, 2016. Eligible candidates will be called for an interview on Monday, 15th February, 2016.
