Graduation: a whole new level

K Damodaran

What happens when a carefree student, right out of school, enters the unfamiliar domain of college?

The final days of December can be quite stressful for Class XII students. Most schools would have covered most of the syllabus for the exams and it would have dawned upon every student that the time for dawdling is over. Parents, teachers, schools and coaching institutes usually have an itinerary ready for students to follow for the next three months, leading up to the board exam in March.
Fast forward to April, when all the students are done with their exams and the final countdown begins for IIT admissions.
The race to the IITs and top medical colleges leaves aspirants exhausted. Students may have been following a meticulous timetable for the last six months, detailed down to the tiniest of bathroom breaks. For them, the suspense of results mixed with the freedom of no exams is a caustic combination that they find hard to combat. So they find it difficult to get back to normal after the entrance exams are over. They take to various television series, the Internet and a general attitude to remain indoors that, without the right set of friends, is hard to get out of.
For the more carefree ones, holidays mean having fun. In the end, the one or two months of ultimate freedom, without the slightest silhouette of worry, makes youngsters forget what it is like to be a student. They begin to become individuals.
Self-discovery
Once you get into college, it is a whole new ball-game. The fastest way to develop individuality is a four-year stint in a college hostel. It can be hard to cope with the leash-less surroundings. Till this juncture, the students were the ones with the don’t-care attitude towards their education. They are surprised when they find out that the college does not care about their education like their school did. In college, it’s not do-or-die, it’s do-it-yourself or drop-out. Colleges do not spoon-feed students. The professors could not care less about your marks or whether you study. The environment of the college may drag you towards extra-curricular activities. To you, it will seem as if a college is anything but a place of pure learning. It is not. A college will not force you to study; but if you don’t, you will face the consequences later, in the form of GPA, CGPA, arrears and so on.
A good collegiate would guide his peers in what he believes to be the right way. But there is no right way in college. As long as you are moving in the general direction forward, you are set. College is a wild kingdom; be a little wild to fit right in. As Dominic Toretto says in The Fast and the Furious series, “We just graduated to a whole new level.”

Greener pastures

Is environment your passion? Here are various study options you can pursue.

Although environmental education as a branch of study in India dates back a few decades, in recent years it has truly diversified. Several new postgraduate specialisations are now in the offing. Here is a look at a few of them.
Environmental economics
Often, in their quest to become economic powerhouses, nations have been accused of neglecting and even violating environmental well-being.
Environmental economics examines this seemingly uneasy relationship between economic development and the environment, to determine ways in which policies can be developed to achieve a balance between safeguarding the environment while growing the economy of a country. For example, looking at how a country can utilise its natural resources such as forests and waterways to benefit the economy, while curbing potential fallouts such as loss in biodiversity and pollution.
Eligibility: Graduates in related disciplines such as economics, commerce and environmental science.
Employment avenues: Mainly in policy and research roles within government as well as non-governmental organisations, think tanks and global institutions such as the World Bank.
Places to study: Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu; Madras School of Economics, Chennai; and TERI University, New Delhi.
Environmental law
Every nation has a set of laws that seek to protect the environment from the adverse effects of human activity. For example, laws protecting forests and wildlife and laws against pollution and waste.
Environmental law examines how such laws are made, ways in which they protect the environment and how they are enforced in society.
Eligibility: Preferably, graduates in law. However, many institutes also accept other relevant qualifications such as environmental science.
Employment avenues: Mainly in legal firms dealing with environmental cases. Interestingly, there are a growing number of niche organisations that deal almost entirely with environmental law, for example the Environment Law and Development Foundation (ELDF), the MC Mehta Environmental Foundation, and the Legal Initiative for Forest and Environment (LIFE).
Apart from this, with growing emphasis on environmental-legal due diligence, many companies hire their own environmental law experts.
Places to study: Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Bharati Vidyapeeth University in Maharashtra, Bangalore University and University of Mumbai.
Environmental management
A multidisciplinary specialisation, environmental management studies the various measures companies as well as industries can take to regulate and protect the health of the natural environment, even as they go about conducting their business. Impact assessment forms the crux of environmental management. It is used to determine the environmental effect of any project undertaken by the organisation and comes into play at all levels — from conceptualisation to design and implementation.
Eligibility: Graduates in related disciplines such as civil, chemical and environmental engineering or environmental science.
Employment avenues: Mainly at consultancies and companies working within the environmental field such as those involved in businesses built around energy, waste management and biotech.
Places to study: Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi: MBA in Environmental Management; Forest Research Institute (FRI) University, Dehradun: MSc in Environmental Management; National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai: PG Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environmental Management; SIES Indian Institute of Environment Management, Mumbai: PG Diploma in Environmental Management, and University of Pune: PG Diploma in Environmental Management.
Climate science
Climate science studies the climate of a place over long durations of time and takes an overarching view of what causes a particular climate and how this affects the environment.
The course covers ways of observing, computing and analysing data to explain existing climatic conditions and also predict future climates.
It also studies phenomena such as floods, windstorms and wildfires that are becoming increasingly common.
Eligibility: Graduates in science and engineering.
Employment avenues: Mainly research and academic roles in public and private sector entities such as the Meteorological Department, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, TERI and Skymet.
Places to study: Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru: M.Tech. in Climate Science; Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, Kochi: M.Sc. Climate Science, and TERI University, New Delhi: M.Sc. Climate Science and Policy.
The writer has recently compiled a book outlining careers and courses in the environmental field in India.

Basic sciences beyond boundaries

VIJAYSHANKAR DANDAPANI writes about how the studyculture at Max Planck Institute for Iron Researchpromotes independent research work.

The Max Planck Society, Germany, has more than 80 international research institutions engaged in fundamental research, spanning the spectrum of natural, life and social sciences and technology. The founder, Adolph von Harnack’s principle of a people-centric approach translates to giving researchers freedom in defining their own scientific questions, supplementing it with excellent working conditions, and nurturing a creativity driven pursuit of knowledge.
The Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH in Düsseldorf (Max Planck Institute for Iron Research) addresses themes of sustainable energy, safe mobility and resilient infrastructure through research in the reliable development of customised material. This translates to dedicated departments, focussed on developing advanced material for energy conversion and high-strength applications, among many others, using state-of-the-art advanced material characterisation techniques combined with powerful computational tools. An in-house mechanical workshop and electronics facility provides for quick realisation of tailored instrumental devices and associated virtual interface software.
I am part of the research group that is focussed on tackling the basic questions of corrosion science, omnipresent in today’s world of materials, through the development of new approaches. The technique central to the group is the Scanning Kelvin Probe (SKP) that allows investigation of diverse topics such as intelligent coatings for corrosion protection and hydrogen induced failure in metals. As part of my Ph.D thesis, we have developed a novel experimental method for characterising the resistance of coatings for corrosion-protection. The selling point for me has been learning to work independently which fosters quick growth in one’s scientific career.
The benefits of being a student in Germany are well-known: nominal tuition fee, mainly a semester contribution fee that includes free public transport throughout the state. Learning the German language might prove to be a challenge which, like any other skill, takes practice.
The Germans I have met till now have always been supportive and encourage conversation. It has been a revelation to me – the close relationship I can form with colleagues just by trying to speak to them in German. I strongly believe that my living experience is enriched with each passing day that I attempt to improve my German language skills.
The entry point for international students is the doctoral programme offered by the International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS). They provide a structured graduate platform with block lectures, seminars and soft-skill training courses that augur well for a holistic learning experience. Currently, there are 60 such programmes covering the disciplines of science, engineering and humanities, each of which has an individual online application process announced twice a year.
The writer is a final-year doctorate candidate at the Max Planck Research Institute for Iron Research, Germany.
Learning the German language might prove to be a challenge which, like any other skill, takes practice.

CBSE for making Class X board exams mandatory

Currently, it is optional for CBSE students to choose either the board exam or a school-based examination.

Board exams for Class X are set to become compulsory for all CBSE students from 2018 as CBSE’s governing body on “unanimously approved” a proposal in this regard.
At the meeting of the CBSE governing body, its members agreed that from the academic session 2017-18, compulsory board exams should be introduced for all students of Class X, sources told PTI in New Delhi.
The decision will now have to be approved by the government before it is implemented.
Currently, it is optional for CBSE students to choose either the board exam or a school-based examination.
HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has in the past favoured making board exam compulsory for CBSE students as is the practice in all State boards.
The sources said while there is a view that for the Class X Board exams, 80 per cent weightage will be given to the marks scored in examinations while 20 per cent weightage will be given to school-based evaluation.
In another key decision, the CBSE has decided to recommend to the HRD Ministry that the three-language formula, under which Hindi, English and modern Indian language are taught, should be extended to class IX and X as well from the current VI to VIII, a source said.
Officials added that the board also favoured sending a recommendation to the Centre that those languages which are listed in schedule VIII of the Constitution should be taught under the three-language formula while languages which are “purely foreign” should be taught as a “fourth language as an elective subject”.
In the past the HRD Ministry-run Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) used to offer German as a third language, but the practice was later discontinued.
The final call on these decisions will be taken by the government, a senior official said.

Whats Your Choice

Whether it is the U.S. or the U.K., the higher education system one opts for should be able to fulfil one’s academic objectives and enhance one’s skillsets.
An estimated 1,80,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from across India fly abroad every year to pursue higher education. A majority (over 54 per cent) of them enrol at American universities while 11 per cent still prefer to enrol at British universities. With xenophobia on the rise after the June 23 Brexit referendum, and the difficulties caused by the current student visa system in the U.K., the flow of Indian students, which has been falling steadily in recent years, is likely to ebb further. Despite this new development, the U.K. remains the third most favoured destination for undergraduate and postgraduate students who are ready — given the astonishingly high cut-offs demanded by the few top-ranked colleges and universities in India — to pay an arm and leg for higher education abroad.
For adventurous students prepared to invest their family’s fortunes in higher education abroad, the first point to note is that the higher education system in the U.S. is markedly different from that in Britain. Before you choose your university or higher education institution, you should decide upon the country in which you want to study. The higher education system you opt for should be able to fulfil your academic objectives and enhance your skill-set. It may be useful to get an overview of the higher education systems of the U.S. and the U.K. to aid the decision-making process in this regard.
The concept of interdisciplinary learning is a common thread in the curriculum of America’s colleges and universities. The flexible U.S. higher education system encourages students to customise study programmes to suit their individual interests. For instance, you could combine religious studies with sociology, or pursue your love of music alongside your penchant for mathematics, or even learn art history and business management studies simultaneously. Moreover, in addition to the primary curriculum, you are free to attend lectures, study, write examinations and obtain credits in other subjects of your choice in wholly unrelated disciplines. For instance, the late Steve Jobs, legendary Apple Inc. co-founder, studied calligraphy conterminously with his major in science at Reed College, a combination which ultimately translated into the sleek designs of Apple products. Similarly, for students inclined toward research, the extensive lab facilities which are a standard feature of universities abroad are easily accessible and professors will welcome offers of assistance with their work and research studies. In short, in America’s universities, students have unparalleled opportunities to customise their education to fulfil all their interests in order to widen their horizons and acquire a well-rounded academic experience. Furthermore, the insistence of almost all universities that foreign students reside on campus for at least the first two years enables them to acclimatise to life in the U.S. and optimally leverage their academic experience when searching for employment opportunities.
U.S. admission
The admissions process for U.S. colleges/universities is thorough and extensive. For prospective undergraduate students, writing prescribed tests — SAT/ACT and language tests such as TOEFL / IELTS — is mandatory. In addition, application essays, letters of recommendation from school principals, class teachers and respected academics, a well-rounded profile furnishing proof of community service, internships and extracurricular activities are also required to be submitted to colleges/universities. It is recommended that aspirants start working on applications a year in advance. Once the admissions committee of your chosen undergraduation college reviews your application and finds you suitable for admission, you will receive a letter of acceptance even before you receive your Class XII board exam results.
Graduates of Indian universities applying for admission into postgraduate programmes of the U.S. universities will need to write the GRE or GMAT exams plus an English proficiency test (TOEFL / IELTS). Admission applications are judged on the basis of academics, professional exam scores and co-curricular and extra-curricular records of applicants during their undergraduate education and work experience. Besides, it is important to demonstrate a strong interest in the chosen field of study through a well-crafted resume and Statement of Purpose. After submitting your application, you may also receive an interview call. The decision on your admission is made after evaluating all these factors.
On the other hand, unlike the longer four-year bachelor’s and two-year master’s programmes offered by the U.S. universities, the shorter three-year undergraduate and 10 or 12-month master’s programmes of British universities provide a much more focused system of education, while offering arts, science and commerce and professional degree programmes. As in India, courses at British universities focus on a single discipline.
There are also similarities between the British and Indian school systems, both of which encourage early division into streams, making it easier for Indian students to adapt to the British tertiary education system. The shorter duration of British degree programmes is also a great advantage because of the lower overall cost of higher education, while the quality of education dispensed by the U.K.’s reputed universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and Imperial College, which routinely rank among the Top 10 in the annual World University Rankings league tables published by QS and Times Higher Education, is on par with the very best U.S. universities.
U.K. admission
The application procedure for British universities is simpler than the usual American process. For undergraduate admissions, writing standardised tests such as SAT and ACT is not required, although IELTS scores for proof of English competency are often mandatory. Moreover, applications to all British universities is centralised through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service) which requires only one letter of recommendation and a single Statement of Purpose for all U.K. applications (there is a limit of 5 universities one can apply to). Of course, a strong profile with good academic scores and a record of co-curricular and/or extra-curricular activities is very helpful here as well.
For graduate students, GRE or GMAT scores are optional for specific universities and courses. Applications are judged on the basis of school and college academic performance and experience in the professional and extracurricular realms. Essays, Statements of Purpose, references and a well-drafted resume along with a standard IELTS score are sufficient for applications to graduate programmes in the U.K. Students can apply to as many universities as they wish, unlike the undergraduate system, and the applications are not centralised: the universities tend to handle graduate admissions directly.
Although scholarships for overseas students are rare and less generous than in the U.S., and admissions are fiercely competitive, the chances of students from Indian schools offering CIE and IB curriculums getting offers are very favourable. Top-ranked Oxbridge and other universities apart, the U.K. has numerous other universities spread across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland that provide high quality, globally respected education. Unlike the U.S. where Class XII exam results are not of great importance, U.K. universities give conditional offers dependent upon securing a certain score in Board exams to secure a place.

NEET 2016: More tips

The year has been one of ambition, hope, determination and some adjustment, especially for medical students. With unexpected developments before the examination, only a small percentage of aspirants were well-prepared to make the cut in the National Talent Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2016. Though the first round of counselling is over, here is a list of everything that you need to know about the counselling process if you are preparing to appear for the second round:
Announcement of results: September 12
Reporting at allotted medical/dental college: This is strictly restricted to round two participants. It begins on September 13 and ends on September 20. After the second round, vacant seats, if any, will be transferred to the State Quota on September 20. MBBS/ BDS session begins on September 30.
Documents required
The registration process, along with choice filling, locking, and seat allotment, will be done online and will not require any documents. Ensure you register in advance as the registration process concludes at 5:00 p.m. After allotment of your seat, you will be required to present the following documents while reporting to your allotted college:
  • NEET 2016 admit card
  • Result/rank letter issued by CBSE
  • Proof of Date of Birth (if not mentioned in the matriculation certificate) and identity
  • Class X certificate, 10+2 certificate, 10+2 mark sheet
  • Eight passport-sized photographs (to be affixed on the application form)
  • Provisional allotment letter (to be generated online after allotment)
  • Migration certificate from the university/Board last attended by the candidate
  • One set of self attested copies of all the certificates. It is mandatory for all candidates to be physically present.
The candidate must also bring the following certificates, if applicable:
  • SC/ST/OBC certificate
  • Orthopaedic physical disability certificate
Before appearing for counselling, consult your mentor/s as they have a good understanding of the overall process and can guide you the best based on your NEET ranking.
Be aware of the opening and closing ranks for every college of your preference. Never choose a college whose closing rank is less than the rank that you’ve obtained.
Lock your preference order after careful assessment of your selections.
Reporting at the designated college is vital to secure the desired seat. Make sure you have all your documents ready well in advance to avoid complications during this final phase.
Counselling is a critical process that needs you to pay considerable attention to detail in order to securing a seat in your desired medical college. A smart analysis of the counselling process can help you secure a seat despite scoring a relatively lower rank. You can enrol yourself in mock counselling sessions to grasp a sound idea of the entire process. With the major milestone of cracking the entrance examination reached, do not take the counselling session lightly as it is the most decisive juncture in your journey to become a qualified medical practitioner.

IIT-Bombay blacklists nine companies for reneging on job offers

In an unprecedented move, the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) on Thursday released the names of nine companies it had blacklisted for allegedly going back on plum job placements they offered to its students.
These companies, most of them startups, were blacklisted for one year for various reasons, IIT-B spokesperson Falguni Benerjee-Naha said.
The erring companies are LeGarde Burnett Group, which had revoked its job offers and was later found to be fake.
Companies LexInnova and IndusInsight delayed the joining dates given to the selected students, Ms. Banerjee-Naha said.
The others who are said to have revoked job offers are GPSK, Johnson Electric of China, Portea Medical, Peppertap and Cashcare Technologies.
One firm, Mera Hunar, came up with a different name and hired the IIT-B students for another startup.
The list of nine companies named on Thursday is not final and more could follow depending on their responses in future, she said.
It is the first time a prestigious institution like the IIT-B has published a list of blacklisted companies for reneging on job offers to its passouts.
The matter had been under review for a couple of months after these companies defaulted on their job offers and was discussed at a recent national-level conclave of all IITs in the country.
Taking a cue from IIT-B, other IITs are expected to follow suit and announce their own lists of companies that have gone back on their placement commitments.

Fee in Self Financing Medical Colleges: No decision yet.

No good news has come up today on MBBS/BDS admission, since the marathon meetings with the State Government and Management representatives failed to yield a result. The meeting concluded without reaching a consensus over fee for Govt Quota seats. Since the Govt refused to hike fee for Govt Quota seats, the Management representatives decided to meet Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to resolve the issue.
According to sources, the Management representatives wanted the govt to increase fees for the 30% merit seats upto Rs 5 lakh. Last year, the fee was Rs. 1,85,000. Talking to media persons after the meeting, Health Minister Shylaja Teacher said, "The govt is ready for a 10% hike in the fee which is allowed considering the sharp rise in the expenditure. However, we could not accept steep fee hike as demanded by the Management Association."
Besides, the Minister made it clear that fees for 20% Govt merit seats will not be increased this year. At present, Rs. 25,000 is the fee for the 20% merit seats. However, the Management representatives refused to accept this formula and decided to take up the issue before the Chief Minister. The date and time of the meeting is yet to be decided.
It is learnt that, the Management presented a fee-formula of Rs 10-15 lakh for 35% Management Quota seats and Rs 15-20 lakh for NRI seats.
Though the Health Minister was firm in the fee rate for the Govt seats, she was silent about the other option before the Govt, ie. to approach the Supreme Court against the HC stay on combined counselling. Now, all eyes are on the meeting with the Chief Minister which will be held in coming days.
Meanwhile, Justice James has started measures to monitor the admission procedure of private self-financing medical colleges in the State. Once, the row over fee is resolved, the allotment procedure will resume in no time.

Class 12 certificates for vocational courses

National Institute of Open Schooling announces guidelines for students

Students undergoing vocational training will soon be able to get a Class 12 certificate that will be equivalent to an intermediate certificate from Central and State Boards.
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, is offering Class 12 and Class 10 certificates through open and distance learning system to students who pass three vocational papers — of same or similar vocations — and two academic papers, one of which should be a language paper. The other can be any of the subjects on offer.
“Till now, we had some vocational courses but these were not National Skill Qualification Framework-compliant. We have now given the syllabi a structured form and will be offering proper Class 12 certificates. This will make many students eligible for jobs that have Class 12 as a necessary qualification. They can also pursue higher education later by enrolling in B-Voc courses,” NIOS chairman professor C.B. Sharma told The Hindu.
The NIOS has also signed an MoU with the Directorate-General of Employment and Training to provide Class 12 and Class 10 certificates to those who have trained in the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). If the person has passed three vocational papers from ITIs, he/she can register with NIOS and pass two academic papers to earn a Class 12 certificate.
This will potentially benefit 18 lakh people who take admission to ITIs each year and also those who passed out of ITIs in the past.
Those who have passed courses in a variety of vocations like electrician, electronic mechanic, fitter, turner, wireman, motor vehicle mechanic, etc., from an ITI are eligible to complete two academic courses from the NIOS through open and distance learning.
The initiatives are part of the Narendra Modi government’s thrust on skill development, something that the UPA government had also tried to encourage at the school level.

Ready to crack CAT?

The computer-based CAT 2016 will test candidates’ verbal ability and reading comprehension, data interpretation and logical reasoning and their quantitative abilities. It will be held on December 4, 2016 and will be conducted in two sessions on the same day.
Considering how more than 2,00,000 candidates registered to write the examination in 2015, marking a five-year high, the CAT examination board has put in place policies to manage the growing demand to appear for the test.
The examination will be conducted in 138 cities around India and those eligible to write the test will be given the option to select four cities, in order of their preference.
Only candidates who have a bachelor’s degree with at least 50 per cent marks or an equivalent CGPA are eligible to write the test.
Candidates completing their final year of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results are also eligible.
“The exam pattern is the same as that for CAT 2015. Sectional timing of 60 minutes, on-screen calculator and non-MCQs (multiple-choice questions) from CAT 2015 are all present this year too,” says Ramnath Kankadandi, CAT course director, T.I.M.E. institute.
“Students can breathe a sigh of relief as the test strategies that they have been working on, based on CAT ‘15, need not be dumped,” he added.
According to the IIM website, 27 per cent of seats will be reserved for Other Backward Classes (NC – OBC) candidates, 15 per cent for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates and 3 per cent for Differently Abled (DA) candidates.
Registration for CAT 2016 will begin on August 8, 2016 and close on September 22.

CBSE declares NEET results

The Central Board of Secondary Education on Tuesday declared the combined results of the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET-I and II) held on May 1 and July 24 for admission to undergraduate medical courses.
As per the Supreme Court’s decision, the CBSE has provided All India Rank to candidates. Het Shah topped the examination with Ekansh Goyal and Nikhil Bajiya securing second and third ranks. Admitting authorities will draw a merit list based on the All India Rank for MBBS/BDS seats falling under their jurisdiction and candidates will have to get in touch with their respective State/Institution for further information, the CBSE said in a statement.
Out of the 7,31,223 candidates who applied for the both exams combined, 4.09,477 students — 1,83,424 men, 2,26,049 women and four transgenders — qualified. Though women candidates performed better than men, in the top 15 per cent among those qualified, 11,058 were men and 8,266 women. One transgender student qualified in the top 15 per cent.
Rank letters
The CBSE said it would provide NEET rank letters to candidates qualifying for 15 per cent All India seats. The details and schedule of counselling would be available on the websites of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Medical Education Directorates of States, AFMC, Institutions and Universities concerned.
Candidates can access their result on www.aipmt.nic.in, www.cbse.nic.in and www.cbseresults.nic.in. Both in NEET-I & NEET-II, 26 candidates were found indulging in unfair practices.
