Law Courses at NLU: Apply by April 7



Kochi: National Law University, Delhi, a University of Law Established by NCT of Delhi, located at Sector-14, Dwarka, New Delhi-110078, has notified the admission to various Degree and PG Programmes at the University for 2016-17. The University has invited applications for admission to B.A.LL.B (Hons.), LL.M and Ph.D Programmes for the academic year 2016-17 commencing in August, 2016. 

Admission to B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M. and Ph.D. Programmes will be through All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) to be conducted from 3 pm to 4.30 pm on May 1, 2016 (Sunday), at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Cuttack, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Raipur and Varanasi.

For admission to the B.A. LL.B. (Hons) Five-Year Programme, applicant should have passed the Senior Secondary School Examination (10+2 System) or equivalent examination with 50% marks. Those appearing in the 12th standard examination in March/April, 2016 can also apply. Applicant should be below 21 years of age as on 1st July, 2016. SC/ST candidates should be below 23 years of age on this date.

There are a total of 80 seats of which 70 seats are filled on merit basis, through All India Law Entrance Test (AILET). The remaining 10 seats are for direct admission to Foreign Nationals on merit. Foreign Nationals are exempted from AILET. Foreign Nationals should have 65% marks in the qualifying examination. 

15% seats are reserved for SC, 7.5% for ST and 3% for Persons with Disabilities. One additional seat is there for Kashmiri Migrants and two supernumerary seats are available for students from Jammu & Kashmir subject to approval of Governing Council. The candidates have to appear in the AILET and fulfil the eligibility criteria as applicable.

Entrance Test for B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) of 90 minutes duration, will have 150 questions carrying a total of 150 marks, from English (35 Marks), General Knowledge (Current Affairs, General Science, History, Geography, Economics, Civics) (35 Marks), Legal Aptitude (35 Marks), Reasoning (35 Marks) and Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability) (10 Marks). Candidates have to secure a minimum of 40% (30% for SC and ST candidates) marks in AILET to become eligible for the admission. If two or more candidates secure the same percentage of marks in the AILET, their merit will be determined in the following manner and order; on the basis of Percentage of marks in the Senior Secondary School Examination (10+2 System) / Higher Secondary School or its equivalent recognized by the University, on the basis of Percentage of marks in the X standard, Age of the candidates, the person elder in age to be preferred and finally by draw of lots. At least 30% of the total seats shall be filled by eligible horizontal reservation for women candidates including those selected in reserved and foreign national categories.

Question Papers Booklet of AILET of previous years can be obtained from the office of the National Law University, Delhi by depositing cash of Rs.500/- or by sending a DD of Rs.550/- in favour of ‘Registrar, National Law University, Delhi’, payable at Delhi.
 
For admission to LL.M. (One year), applicant should hold LL.B. or an equivalent Law Degree with 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ST/ Persons with Disability). Those appearing in final LL.B. examination in April/May, 2016 can also apply. There are 45 seats. An additional 5 seats are there for Foreign Nationals. Foreign Nationals are exempted from AILET. Reservation will be 15% for SC Candidates, 7.5% for ST Candidates, 3% for Persons with Disabilities. 

The admission to LL.M shall be through a written test to be conducted by the University, followed by an interview. Candidates awaiting results of the qualifying examination can appear for the Entrance Test, subject to the condition that they produce proof of having passed the qualifying examination with the prescribed percentage of marks at the time of interview. The total number of seats is 20. Entrance Test for LL.M. of 90 minutes duration will carry 150 marks. There will be 100 (objective type) questions of one mark each from Law of Contracts, Law of Torts, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and Legal Theory and one Essay of 50 marks on a topic of law from the above subjects.

For admission to Ph.D., applicant should hold LL.M. Degree with 55% marks or its equivalent (50% in case of SC/ST/ Persons with Disability). 
Admission to Ph. D. shall be through a written test to be conducted by the university. The candidates who have qualified for UGC NET / JRF, SLET, and M. Phil. are exempted from taking the admission test. Entrance Test for Ph. D. will have a written test which will consist of two papers. Paper I will be Research Methodology, carrying 100 marks and will have 100 objective type questions of Multiple Choice and will be of 1 hour 30 minutes duration.

Paper II will be Research Proposal Specific Paper, carrying 100 marks. It shall not be a written paper. The candidate has to submit a research proposal not exceeding 15 pages on the topic in which the candidate wants to pursue a Ph.D. The Research Proposal shall contain (a) Title (b) Statement of problem & background information on the subject (c) Research questions, Hypothesis & Methodology; and (d) Research design. 

The candidates must submit 3 copies of the Research Proposal after declaration of AILET-2016 result, failing which the candidates will not be interviewed. The candidates successful in the written test shall be required to make an oral presentation before the Doctoral Committee on the dates notified by the University. 

Enrolment for the Ph.D. Degree shall ordinarily be full-time. The candidate shall put in a minimum of two-years residence of which at least 18 months shall be in the university. There will be provision for the candidate to earn credits for research work done outside the university. A full time candidate should complete the work and submit it for evaluation within a maximum period of 3 years. 

There is a provision for part-time enrolment for the Ph.D. Degree. A part-time candidate shall put in a minimum of three years of part-time study in the University including time spent for research at any other place with the permission of the supervisor. The part-time candidate shall put in residence in the University for at least a total period of 6 months spread over the three year period. Five years shall be the maximum period in which the part-time candidate shall complete the research work and submit it for evaluation.

Conversion either from part-time to full-time or from full-time to part-time is to be permitted only with the approval of the Doctoral Committee. In cases of both part-time and full-time enrolment, the supervisor of the candidate shall ensure monitoring of the research work done by the scholars outside the university campus by insisting on production of adequate proof of work done. Enrolment for the Ph. D. shall be deemed to have lapsed after three years from the date of enrolment in the case of full-time scholars and five years in the case of part-time scholars. In such cases, however, the Doctoral Committee, on the application by the concerned scholar along with the report of supervisor, may give extension of time for a period of six months at a time but for a maximum period of not more than one year. 

The scholars should undertake course work for a minimum period of one semester and take three courses. The three courses include Course on Legal Education and Research, Course focusing on the research area of Ph. D scholar, and Practical Teaching Course. Scholars possessing M. Phil./ Ph.D. Degree may be exempted from taking the Research Methodology paper in the course work provided they have completed such a course earlier. The Ph. D scholar shall secure at least 50% marks in each paper. The course work shall be completed within six months from the date of registration. Ph.D. Scholar failing to secure 50% of marks in the courses mentioned above may be provided an opportunity to re-appear one or more times within three months of the publication of results. The Ph. D scholar shall be allowed to continue further research work only after completing the course work as mentioned above.

Professor, Visiting Professor with total ten years of teaching experience will be eligible to guide five students for Ph.D. Associate Professor with total eight years of teaching experience with Ph.D. will be eligible to guide four students for Ph.D. The Number of seats for Ph.D. will depend on the availability of suitable candidates but it will not exceed 10 students in an academic year.

Below Poverty Line (BPL) applicants of SC/ST category are exempted from application fee. Payment of application fee can be made by Cash Deposit at Post Office or by using the Online Payment Gateway using payments from Credit Cards/Debit Cards or Net banking. To apply Online, applicant should have valid e-mail id and mobile number and a Scanned Copy of Photograph (in .jpg, .gif or .bmp format) not more than 150 KB. 75% of the photograph must cover the candidate's face. Details on the procedure for applying online are available at the website.
